Short on time? Our quick picks
If you only read one part, read this. These are the laptops we would recommend to a friend from this year's Black November list.
Why November is the time to buy
The festive season packs a lot of laptop buying into a short window. Families shop for Christmas gifts, Form Four leavers get ready for college, university students prepare for the January semester, and many people start new jobs in the new year. All of that demand lands on the same popular models.
Buying during Black November means you get the offer price, and you have the laptop set up and tested before the January rush. You also have time to sort out software, accounts and any questions with us while the shop is calm.
Buy in November, set up in December, and start January ready to work.
The Black November prices run until 30 November 2026, or while stock lasts. Popular configurations, especially Core i5 laptops between KES 20,000 and KES 30,000, are usually the first to sell out.
Ex-UK laptops: what you are really buying
An Ex-UK laptop is a pre-owned laptop imported from the United Kingdom. Most of ours come from companies that refresh their equipment every few years, which is why the list is full of HP EliteBook, Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad models. These are the laptops big organisations buy for their staff.
Why business laptops make better second-hand buys
Business ranges are built to survive years of daily commuting and office use. They typically have stronger hinges and chassis, spill-resistant keyboards on many models, more ports, and parts that are easier to replace. A three or four year old EliteBook will often outlast a brand-new budget consumer laptop at the same price.
You also get much more for your money. A new laptop with a Core i7, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD costs far more than the KES 33,000 the same specification starts at in this sale.
The best laptop for what you do
Start with how you will use the laptop, not with the brand. Here is what we recommend for the people who walk into our shop most often.
University and college students
A light 12 to 14-inch laptop with an 8th gen or newer Core i5, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD covers assignments, research, Zoom classes and Office. Look at the ThinkPad X280 from KES 22,000, the Dell Latitude 5300 from KES 23,000 and the ThinkPad T480s from KES 24,000.
Form Four leavers and computer classes
For a first laptop used for typing, packages and online courses, a Core i5 with 8GB RAM is plenty. Stay at 8th gen or newer if you can, so it runs the current version of Windows properly for years.
Office workers and small businesses
The HP EliteBook 840 and Dell Latitude 5400 are classic office laptops: 14-inch screens, full keyboards and plenty of ports for projectors and printers. A Core i5 handles email, Excel and accounting packages; choose a Core i7 with 16GB if you keep many programs open.
Freelancers and remote workers
You live on your laptop, so spend a little more for 16GB RAM, a 10th or 11th gen processor and a good battery. The EliteBook 830 and 840 G7 and G8 start from KES 28,000, and for 16GB RAM the ThinkPad T490s starts at KES 28,000.
Developers, accountants and data work
Choose a Core i7 with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. Code editors, virtual machines, large Excel models and accounting databases all use a lot of memory. These start at KES 33,000.
Designers and content creators
For Canva, Photoshop and light video editing, go for an 11th gen Core i7 with 16GB RAM. Its Intel Iris Xe graphics are far stronger than older chips. Business laptops are not built for heavy 3D work or gaming, so ask us before you buy for that.
Laptop specs in plain English
A listing like "840 G7, Core i5, 10th gen, 8GB, 256GB, touch" tells you almost everything about a laptop. Here is how to read it.
Processor
Celeron · Core i3 · Core i5 · Core i7The laptop's engine. Celeron is for basic tasks. Core i5 is the sweet spot for most people. Core i7 is for heavy work and multitasking.
Generation
6th gen up to 12th genHow new the processor is. A newer generation is faster and more efficient. A recent Core i5 can beat an older Core i7, so check both.
RAM (memory)
4GB · 8GB · 16GB · 32GBHow many things the laptop can do at once. 8GB is the comfortable minimum today; 16GB is for heavy users. On many slim laptops RAM cannot be added later.
Storage (SSD)
128GB · 256GB · 512GBWhere your files live. Every laptop on our list uses a fast SSD. 256GB suits most people; choose 512GB for lots of photos, videos or software.
Model and "G" number
e.g. EliteBook 840 G7For HP, 830 means 13.3 inches and 840 means 14 inches. The G number is the generation of that model: a G7 is newer than a G5.
Touch, x360 and 2-in-1
Touchscreen or convertible"Touch" means you can tap the screen. "x360", "Yoga" and "2-in-1" mean the screen also folds all the way back so the laptop becomes a tablet.
Windows 11 and processor generations
This is the most important thing many buyers miss. Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10 in October 2025, and Windows 11 officially supports Intel processors from the 8th generation onwards. Laptops with 6th and 7th gen chips can still run well, but they are not on Microsoft's official Windows 11 list.
In practice that means: if you want a laptop that gets security updates the normal way for years, choose 8th gen or newer. Good news: 77 of the 98 configurations in our Black November list are 8th gen or newer, and they start from KES 22,000.

Eight checks before you pay for any laptop
Whether you buy from us or anywhere else in Nairobi, these checks protect your money. They take about ten minutes.
- Battery health. On Windows, open Command Prompt and type
powercfg /batteryreport. Compare "Full charge capacity" with "Design capacity". The closer they are, the healthier the battery. - No BIOS or company lock. Restart and confirm the laptop does not ask for a BIOS password or show a company management screen. A locked ex-corporate laptop can be impossible to reset.
- Windows is activated. Go to Settings, then Activation, and check that Windows shows as activated.
- Every key and the trackpad. Open Notepad and type every key, including numbers and symbols. Test left and right click and two-finger scrolling.
- Screen. Open a fully white and a fully black image and look for dead pixels, lines or dark patches. On touch models, tap all four corners.
- Ports, Wi-Fi and camera. Plug a flash disk into each USB port, connect to Wi-Fi, and open the camera and a quick voice recording.
- Hinges and body. Open and close the lid a few times. It should feel firm with no creaks or wobble. On 2-in-1s, fold it into tablet mode.
- The right charger. Make sure the charger matches the laptop and charges it. A weak third-party charger can damage the battery over time.
Giving a laptop this Christmas
A laptop is one of the most useful gifts you can give a student, a new graduate or a parent starting a small business. A few tips make it a gift they will actually love.
Match the laptop to the person
For a student heading to campus, choose light and tough: a ThinkPad X280 or Dell Latitude 5300. For a parent or grandparent, a 14-inch screen with a comfortable keyboard, like the EliteBook 840, is easier on the eyes. For a creative teenager, a touchscreen 2-in-1 is a lot of fun.
Get it ready before you hand it over
Charge it fully, connect it to Wi-Fi and let Windows finish updating before Christmas Day. Nothing kills the excitement like an hour of updates. Add a laptop bag and a surge protector and the gift is complete.
Order early
Gift buying peaks in the second half of December. Ordering during Black November gets you the offer price and avoids a last-minute search for a model that has sold out.
Looking after your laptop in Kenyan conditions
A business laptop can last many years with a little care. These habits matter most here.
Protect it from power surges
Power cuts and surges can damage chargers and motherboards. Plug in through a good surge protector, and unplug during storms. If the power goes off, let the laptop run on its battery rather than reconnecting the moment it returns.
Keep dust and heat away
Dust blocks the fan and makes laptops run hot. Use it on a hard, flat surface rather than a bed or cushion, and have the vents cleaned once a year. Never leave it in a parked car in the sun, especially on the coast.
Treat the battery well
Batteries last longest when they are not kept at 0% or left hot at 100% all day. Many HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops let you cap charging at around 80% in their settings, which is worth turning on if the laptop lives on a desk.
Travelling upcountry for the holidays
Carry the laptop in your hand luggage, in a padded bag, and keep the charger with it. Back up your important files to the cloud or a flash disk before you travel.
